Happy Super Bowl Hangover Day!

Great game, great commercials, really old halftime show.

The Game

I thought it was a great game played by both sides. The two #1 seeds did not disappoint. Incredibly gutsy call by Sean Payton to open the second half. It is a make or break call. He is either the hero or the goat.

And speaking of hero or goat, why does one play have to mean everything? People today are jabbering about Peyton Manning choking, he will never be considered the greatest QB now, etc. Really, because of one interception?

Look, I hate the whole greatest ever competition because there is no way you can accurately gauge that and in the end it is a matter of opinion. But calling Peyton a choker because of one INT?

Who knows what really happened – Manning threw the INT, Reggie Wayne ran a bad route or heaven forbid Tracy Porter made a great play, why can’t that just be one play? Why does it have to define everything.

It is funny, Manning is always called the smartest guy on the field, a coach on the field. What if Tracy Porter has been studying tape for 2 weeks and was waiting for that pass? Oh wait he did studying tape and was waiting for it…

Manning is an expert at disguising plays, but Saints cornerback Tracy Porter, who described his pre-game preparation as one of “excessive film study,” recognized it immediately. “I saw it over and over on film, it’s a big third down play for them,” he said. “…Once I saw Austin Collie go, I knew…Yeah, I had it in my mind to jump the route.”

He knew Reggie Wayne, the elder statesman of Manning’s decorated receiving corps, would run a slant inside. “A stick route,” he called it. He knew his safety, Darren Sharper, would have him covered from behind. Manning, not far from what seemed like a sure game-tying touchdown, would release the ball quickly.

Porter saw Wayne plant his feet and cut. In every respect, the defender would recall, the play unfolded “just like on film.”

The Halftime Show

Wow the halftime shows features some really old people. Roger Daltrey is 65 and Pete Townsend is 64. Do you realize they had to eat dinner before the halftime show? The early bird specials were over at 5pm.

So who does the NFL trot out next year?

The Bee Gees? Steely Dan? Lynyrd Skynyrd?

The Commercials

I usually disagree with the ratings posted on USAToday’s site regarding the Super Bowl commercials, but I have to say I am down with them this year.

Their top 5
Snickers: Betty White
Doritos: Dog Collar
Bud Light: Can house
Budweiser: Fences
Coca Cola: Sleepwalking

Most ads seemed to feature people slapping each other or people walking around in tighty-whities. Also, it seems like me most people are tired of the Danica Patrick/GoDaddy commercials. I just feel embarrassed for GoDaddy when I watch them. You sell domain names and you promote it with chauvinistic sex. It’s just embarrassing.

Also, great stat from SportsTalk in the chat room: 4 of the last 9 Super Bowl MVP’s played in the Big 10. Man the Big Ten sucks.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

It isn’t a revelation that UNI is the best team in the State. What is surprising is how good of a TEAM they are. They are playing and working together and just aren’t fazed when their backs are against the wall. They definitely have the make-up of a team that could do some damage in the post season.

Big game this week as UNI travels to the Knapp Center Wednesday night. This game should be a sellout, but I am guessing 6,000 – 6,500 make it through the turnstiles.

Iowa State played another great half in Ames, it is just too bad you have to play both halves. Per Randy Peterson’s blog Kansas State coach Frank Martin had a few comments for Lucca Staiger:

My heart goes out to Greg and those kids because to deal with the injuries to (Jamie) Vanderbeken and Boozer, and then to turn around and have some selfish guy quit on his team and for them to still be playing as hard as they are is a credit to their team and coaching staff,” Kansas State coach Frank Martin said.

In other basketball the University of Iowa is still playing D1 basketball and played a few more games last week.
