Weekend wrap
Iowa Cubs
Screw job at Principal Park.

Forget the fact that the team with the best record doesn’t make the playoffs, the PCL did a real disservice to Memphis and Iowa by having true “minor league” umps work this series at Principal Park.
Sunday’s game with everything on the line was a joke. The umps lost control of the game at the first pitch and never regained control. Questionable calls behind the plate, a home plate ump with dog ears more worried about what was going on on the benches than on the field and one of the strangest calls I’ve ever seen.
I would love to have someone explain what happened in the 2nd inning. Tyler Greene was at the plate and was “hit” by the pitch. The home plate umpire ruled that the ball hit the bat. The call was appealed and the first base umpire, who was at second base also ruled that the ball hit the bat. Got that so far, two umps ruled that the batter wasn’t hit by the pitch. We’ll the Redbirds third base coach came strolling down the line argued the call and what do you know, they reversed the call.
I have rarely seen a call over turned and never after 2 umps have ruled on it.
And just to tell you how sensitive these horrible umps were, in the 8th, with the game tied, Iowa Cub relief pitcher Hung-Wen Chen threw a pitch that went about 10 feet over the catchers head. The home plate ump warned both benches! Seriously, a end all game with everything on the line. A tied score and the ump actually thinks the pitcher is throwing at a batter. Are you stupid?????
All of this after the same crew threw out both managers the night before.
The Cubs did have their chances, but it is really sad that the PCL sets up the league’s playoffs like this and that they assign such a weak crew to such a pivotal game.
College Football
It is back baby.
I love it, but I think it is a ridiculous having these guys play on Sunday and Monday. I mean I watching, but it just doesn’t feel right having college kids play on Sunday and Monday.
Anyway, onto the games.
Iowa and Iowa State both got past out matched opponents. We’ll be breaking down the big game this week and have wall-to-wall coverage this week as we prepare for the 2:30 kick Saturday at Kinnick.

Iowa Highlights
In other College Football. Great late night game Monday, Boise St and Va Tech. Entertaining throughout. You might dislike Boise, but tell you what they’ve played in a couple of the more entertaining games in the past couple of years – last night and the game against Oklahoma.
By far the best play of the week was turned in by Presbyterian. They lost by 40, but it was still a cool play.
What is up with all the Iowa flags?
Iowa flags were flying high at ESPN College Gameday in Atlanta and at the end of the Boise State/Va Tech game.
